When Saturday Comes
By: Tom | August 1st, 2007The game is still three days away, but any Fire’s fans nostrils are full of the smell of excitement, the hours ticking down until we find out: are we for real?
Ever since the first Toronto game back in April, when the two hundred of us who made the trip to Canada suddenly found ourselves cheering for what we realised was really quite a bad team, it has been hard to look forward to a game. Indeed, I’ve been to every home game since, but not once have I turned up to Toyota Park expecting we would win, and only once did we.
And then He arrived. Alright, that’s overdoing it, but there’s already blasphemous talk of Blanco as the Greatest Fire Ever (can I use Fire as a noun like that? No?), which given he’s played all of 78 minutes of competitive football for us, seems a touch presumptuous. But I cannot help share in the sudden rush of blood to the head, as if we had been entombed six feet under, a rotting worm-ridden corpse that couldn’t even beat the likes of Real Salt Lake at home, suddenly resurrected and standing tall.
Of course, all that’s actually happened since Blanco arrived is that we’ve tied 1-1 with an out of shape Celtic in a friendly and beaten an injury-ravaged and not particularly good Toronto team. But we do have a new coach, that seems to want to play attacking soccer. And Blanco does ooze class on the ball, and that’s something we haven’t seen…for a while. And a guy that’s scored in the past two World Cup Finals is about to make his debut for us (Wanchope). And the player that gave us hope at the start of the season (before yet another injury) is about to return (Rolfe).
And that gives us nothing less than Blanchopolfe. So when Saturday comes, we’ll find out if we’re really set for a playoffs run, in a crucial six-pointer against Columbus: it’s what they call a must-win game. So do you believe in Blanchopolfe?

Between calling the players “Fires” (I endorse the bejesus out of that tradition and will borrow it; thanks) and “Blanchopholfe,” this is one fantastic post.
Congratulations, by the way, on having a team worth getting excited about again. Hope it holds together for you (if only in a way that in no way harms my interests).

I’ve been a Blanco skeptic from the day he signed but there is no denying he adds some excitement to a team that sure could use some. Certainly makes me more eager to tune into a Fire match.

Blanco is as close to an impact player i have seen on the Fire. (I admit I am only in my second year as a fanatic) I expect he and Wanchope to make all players around them better. Not to mention Rolfe’s return. I am hopeful. Here is to a GREAT game.
