Wanchope Signs for the Fire
By: Tom | July 26th, 2007From ESPN Soccernet:
Former Derby and Manchester City striker Paulo Wanchope has reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Chicago Fire.
The 31-year-old Costa Rican, who played at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, is set to be officially presented by the MLS side in a press conference tomorrow.
‘Wanchope has passed his medical and agreed all the details of his contract with the (club) president,’ said Chicago Fire’s press officer Dan Jankowski.
‘We expect to sign the contract and give a press conference on Friday.’
A one-year deal, not on designated player money, sounds smart to me, given Wanchope’s injury history. His previous history with Osorio at Man City is a good sign – presumably he respects the coach, or he wouldn’t have joined. So all in all, this seems like a sensible, small gamble to me. What do you think?

Hey, if the Fire can rise above their current mediocrity with two aging, foreign, formerly-big-name strikers at the helm, they’ll be living the cliche MLS dream, will they not?

Congrats on the pick up. I saw him play with Rosario and he still has tons left in the tank. I even did a little write up on it for the Red Bulls blog.

i don’t think wanchope is past his sell by date. he’ll be a monster. imagine a midfield of mapp, armas, thiago and blanco up as a trequartista feeding balls to rolfe and wanchope? damn.
