The Lost GM: Peter Wilt

By: Tom | March 14th, 2007

The men that run football clubs are rarely open to fans, even after they’ve moved on to new pastures. One exception is former Fire GM Peter Wilt. Over at BigSoccer Wilt responds with remarkable candour and speed to Fire fans’ questions on all manner of topics.

Wilt was very popular with Fire fans – for good reason, as he was in charge for the Fire’s first championship and led the project to build the new stadium in Bridgeview. Fans protested by draping some of the ground in black fabric following AEG’s decision to can Wilt after their takeover of the club in 2004.

Wilt is currently involved in several soccer projects, including the new WUSA. His knowledge of the inner workings of the professional game in Chicago is probably unmatched. Given he was fired to be replaced by a marketing “expert” who failed to fill Toyota Park regularly last season, AEG – if they hold on to the club – should really take another look at their decision.

Any general manager who will stand with the supporters behind the goal during a match is one that I can support. MLS would be well served to have more guys like Peter Wilt and less like the ones who spend all their time thinking about how to create generic atmosphere at their stadiums.
