That was not soccer
By: Tom | July 2nd, 2007Nor was it football, either. I left a very pleasant barbecue by the lake to go watch the Fire host the Colorado Rapids, but by halftime, I felt more like ripping out my own intestines than watching the second half. Two of the worst teams in MLS went at it with some of the best soccer seen outside of your local pub league.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ll still be there for the next home game. I’ve watched enough lower division English football in my time to know supporting a team is about more than the aesthetically pleasing patterns of ball movement a good team performs. But still, this was an atrocious game in front of a thankfully small crowd (an announced 10,626 that seemed rather optimistic to me) and I’d like to forget it ever took place.
The sad thing is, it was actually a step forward for the Fire, after two consecutive defeats in MLS. Because, if you hadn’t guessed it already, the result was a nil-nil draw.

“Two of the worst teams in MLS went at it with some of the best soccer seen outside of your local pub league.”
I caught the last half hour, and your comment is an insult to pub leagues everywhere.

Stop commenting, people! I’m trying to forget it ever took place, remember?

What are you trying to forget ever took place?
Besides that question, perhaps you can help me figure out why my face is a flat and bloody pulp and the wall in my living room is caved in at head-height.

The positives I took from the game: Pickens was sharp, Coleen Carr played decent, Olivera appears to have some promise. The negatives are obviously too much to bear but I’m disappointed in the lineup and the substitutions used. Don’t you learn what not to do sitting next to Sarachan for, how many years? Christ, blow this up and start all over.

Does anyone know anything about the new Brazilian we just signed? Melenze..I think that was his name. Outside of the bland wikipedia and press release info?

“Coleen Carr played decent,”
Giggle. Carr is without question the loveliest, most delicate-featured player in MLS. Probably in the entire world of soccer.

Were any of the Fire players at this barbeque you went to before the game? They played as though they had just come from scarffing down a big Sunday dinner.

Ok that’s mean. They played like perfect strangers.:)
Ok that’s snide. They played like a cobbled together lineup. Colorado did better defending.
It was a tough game to watch. I found myself wondering about the bird circling over the North parking lot. That wasn’t a hawk…and it’s wings were too thin to be a vulture..nevertheles. oh damn, Coundoul made a good save. Missed it!Posted from

Calen Carr either needs to either get to a gym or find that pub league Tom was referencing. And for God sake lose the bleedin’ head band! I love the Fire but am beginning to hate this squad.

Wow I must be a glutton for punishment. Unfortunately the last game is becoming more and more typical of what we can expect from the Fire. And I can’t believe that someone else is finally expressing some realistic opinions about Carr. His main attribute is speed. So what. I don’t think there is anyone on the team that can seriously take opponents on one on one with any semblance of dribbling skill. Nor do we have anyone that can be conidered a longer range shooting threat. I can put up with losing but I rather see a skillful display of soccer. A little excitement! Something!! No wonder the anti soccer forces find our beloved game boring. Watching any more matches like this will cause me to question my own beliefs.

I certainly understand everyone’s frustration. I cdertainly disagree about some things. Starting with the ‘no talent’ on the Fire type remarks. There’s plenty of talent here. Mapp, obviously. It’s good to have him back. But we have more. Lots more. That doesn’t meanb that we’ve had any coaching that can call the talent to bear. We have had a horror show of coaching, but now it is over. Osario has a good rap sheet and a lot of respect from abroad & via the metros. As for the rest of our players, there’s plenty going for them, and hopefully, they’ll show it all under Osario. Carr has huge talent, and not just speed, but also technical skill and a good shot when he has chances. I think he’s been dispirited. Same for Chad B. You can feel both of them as they’ve struggled with the instability of decision making and coaching. Chad is an entirely differernt kind of player from Carr, and a complementary player up front. Both of them can move the ball well. Our midfield, well, that’s another story. Menezes will be interesting to see. Does anyone know anything about him?
Let’s see how Osario sizes up this team. Chances are, we’re going to learn a lot about what real talents are here.Posted from
