Peter Wilt and John Guppy on Dave Sarachan’s tenure
By: Tom | June 20th, 2007Peter Wilt, the former Fire GM who hired Dave Sarachan, to me via email:
It should be remembered that Dave coached the Fire to four trophies in four seasons including the organization’s only Supporters Shield (regular season championship) ever. This is a difficult business, but he should be proud of his accomplishments. Dave came to the Fire after a season (2002) that was similar to this one in terms of injuries and call ups. He led the team back to two championship games his first season and rejuvenated the team. This season has been difficult for the team and the fans. The Fire are currently playing without nine of their players, including six or seven starters and more than 60% of their salary budget is tied up in those unavailable players. Those are difficult circumstances for any coach.
I am pleased that Denis Hamlet will have the opportunity to become the first black head coach in Major League Soccer history. Denis was the first employee I hired in 1997 and has earned this opportunity. As a Fire supporter and admirer of Denis, I hope he can earn the permanent position and forge a run to both the MLS Cup and US Open Cup championships.
John Guppy, the current Fire GM who fired Dave Sarachan, quoted on the Fire website:
We are appreciative of everything Dave has done for this organization – he has been a true professional in every sense of the word. At the same time, we realize that the team is not headed in the direction we would like and felt a change was necessary.

I once read a quote from a seasoned NFL head coach to a rookie head coach paraphrased: I don’t worry about the what the fans or the press are saying. I worry about what the man in the suit (the GM) is saying sitting next to the owner.
Dave has a nice MLS resume. I am sure he will not have a problem finding a new gig. To bad it didn’t happen sooner…RSL could have used a seasoned coach.Posted from

Peter Wilt defines the word “Class”. Best of luck to Sarachan, but it just wasn’t working anymore.
Good luck to Denis!
