Optimism, we hardly knew ye
By: Sean | March 27th, 2008So yesterday I had this burst of optimism about the Fire, and I didn’t just lie down until it went away. Now, I’m thinking maybe I should have, as normal offseason service has been restored.
Conde whining like spoiled child
Apparently, in Colombia, when you sign a contract it is understood to be valid so long as it’s cool with everyone involved, or something. Conde continues to bitch and moan to his teammates that the mean, mean Messrs. Klopas and Guppy won’t let him go to New York to continue as Juan Carlos Osorio’s catamite.
We’ve all worked with that guy, y’know? The guy who bitches vehemently about management, hoping to push them into a confrontation so he can act like they’re coming down on him. And that guy sucks. What’s more, Conde has even less excuse than that guy - he’s got agents and advisors who do all the reading and explaining for him, so he can’t even claim to be confused with a straight face. He just wants what he wants, and he’s going to act like an ass if they don’t give it to him.
Wilman Conde, that sucks. Kindly grow up and stop sucking, please.
Oh, and get the word out in Latin America: In the USA, the checks don’t bounce, and the clubs have teams of lawyers. There is no secret olly-olly-oxen-free code word to break your contract. You’ll be expected to honor it. If you don’t want to, there’s always beach football, or maybe the MISL. Just don’t try to show up for anything under FIFA’s umbrella.
CJ Brown, backup keeper
Annnd the winner in today’s free-kick-to-the-groin competition, Dom Cervi has decided that signing the standard MLS contract isn’t in his best interest. Which means that the Fire have Jon Busch between the pipes, and basically no one else. This is the same Jon Busch who might need legal remedies to keep his name from becoming ‘Oft-Injured Jon Busch’ simply through repetition. Oy.
The good news is that this has sent a bolt of electricity through the community of MLS backup keepers, which is apparently buzzing at the thought of the playing time virtually guaranteed to Busch’s backup. Where Nick Noble is in this conversation I’m not certain.
WonderSuck Powers Activate!
I’ve just got this feeling that these two bits of news will be tied up in a bow somehow. Off the top of my head, I’m imagining a Conde-for-Zach Thornton swap. What a bit of pessimist synergy that would be - we solve Red Bulls’ defensive problems, and in exchange we get The Man Who Ate All The Pies.
I think I’m going to go steal Conde’s crying towel. I may need it.

Big Zach stopped one hell of a penalty shot . . . and we have 4 keepers in our stable, including a great prospect in Danny Cepero.
Maybe we can reach a deal my friend. Ill have your people call my people.

You totally jinxed us with the optimism article!
That said all this bad will is going to be completely erased come Saturday night after a 3-0 drubbing of RSL. No really, it will.

You can’t mention Conde’s behavior without mentioning how childish the management themselves are acting. Refusing to trade him to another team who offered a solid striker(which they did) because that team *may* then trade Conde to RBNY? talk about some sour grapes.

Camjam- the only person who’s said that is Ives. And we don’t know the team or the striker that was turned down. And Ives is well known to be partial to RBNY in his reporting, so using the ‘they didn’t agree to the trade because they were scared that he’d go to RBNY’ I wouldn’t believe til it was confirmed by a non-Ives reliable source.
And really- who is going to trade a proven forward at this point? Seally from KC- but KC could use Conde more than anyone that RBNY offers, and Seally isn’t really trade bait. Chivas got rid of Cunliffe (a not proven forward) for a defender/midfielder, so maybe the player in question was Eskandarian? Razov? Or maybe Mina, coming off injury, hasn’t settled his problems with Dallas yet. That might be stretching ‘proven’, but who else is available? There are reasons to reject Mina other than a possible secondary trade.
The point I’m making is that this rumor came from a source who has demonstrated NY bias in that past and hasn’t named the other party or player in the deal. Attributions of motives and how good the deal actually was can’t be determined unless we know more.

Uhh, what bluemeanies said.
Chicago management has taken the position that they’re not willing to trade Conde, despite his wishes to the contrary. I’m not sure how a NYRB fan could consider this foul play, since the tort in this case seems to be the tampering of Osorio with players under contract to the Fire.
I’m sick of talking about Conde, frankly. My guess is that, given assurances they’ll accept reasonable offers in the August transfer window, Conde will play his butt off with quiet fury and leave before the stretch drive. Given my lifelong tendency to be mind-blowingly wrong about virtually everything, though, anything’s possible.
