On Rolfe and that troublesome right wing
By: Sean | January 31st, 2008Let’s get something out there right away: I’m a Chris Rolfe fan. Love his touch, his awareness, his movement off the ball, his competitiveness, and his heavy shot. Seems to me that Rolfe offers everything you’d want in a foil for Blanco.
Unless, that is, he’s waaaaaay out on the right flank, where the Fire seem to have an institutional weakness. (That’s a post for another day, the horrors of the history of the Fire right wing.) Which brings us, finally, to the point of this post: Please, please, please, Señor Hamlett, pleeeeeease find another solution to this problem.
Please put Chris Rolfe up front where he belongs. Please.
Put Rolfe on the wing, and you’re cutting the legs out from under all his best attributes. He’s shifty, but not blazing fast. He’s tricky in tight spaces and combines well, but is not a classic passer of the ball. His quick, heavy shot can take keepers by surprise, but not from 25 yards.
Up front, Chris Rolfe’s movement, anticipation and touch open up the final third. On the wing, he is undersized, lacks top-end speed and, most importantly, defensive bite.
Ehh, what do I know. Maybe Rolfe’s the truth on the wing, and the Nyarko/Barrett tandem will combine for 30 goals this year. Whaddaya think?
