More strikers than Milan!

By: Sean | February 25th, 2008

In years past, we all had some fun at Tiny Dave Sarachan’s expense because of his soft spot (notice I didn’t say ‘obsession’ – I’m careful like that) for holding mids. Well, I did, anyway. Didn’t you?

Darn.

Ok, so here’s your chance to join in the fun. The new honcho, Señor Hamlett, loves him some strikers. Besides last year’s rotation of Rolfe, Barrett and Carr, the Fire (re-)added noted brawler Andy Herron, Polish poacher Tomas Frankowski, and draftee Patrick Nyarko.

But wait! There’s more! Ex-Lyon, ex-Fulham, ex-a-few-other-teams-in-the-last-coupla-years Steve Marlet is still in camp, having made the first cutdown, beating out Mexican striker José de Jesús Mendoza, among others.

That makes seven strikers in camp for maybe four slots in the striking rotation. Which means that, as usual, we’ll start hearing about how well Chris Rolfe is doing on the right wing.

I’m not going to go into a rant here. I’m glad that guys are fighting for spots on the roster. I just look at that hole on the right and go, ‘Errmmm …’ Then I think of the fragile limbs of John Thorrington, and go, ‘Urrrkk …’

Then I imagine the only American striker with any juice on the roster playing 50 yards from goal. I imagine Rolfe’s concerns changing from ‘how can I get this thing in the net’ to ‘if I make this run now, and the pass isn’t there, I’ll be too far forward and we’ll get countered.’

Maybe I’m over-reacting – it is a specialty of mine. Maybe there’s a right-sided midfielder who’ll stake a claim this preseason. But looking at the roster is sending me looking for Xanax right now.

I dunno. Whaddaya think?

Yeah - the news in the South Bay is disturbingly quiet but I will not be surprised to find out he’s already in camp with us.

There’s supposed to be some announcement today about a signing I guess? Am I bogarting the Chicago blog?
