I really liked Stephen King
By: Johnathan | November 27th, 2008As Ives reported Tuesday, there was indeed a salary increase clause in Marco Pappa’s contract with MLS that would have made him much more expensive had he moved clubs. One has to wonder whether Frank Klopas had the foresight to make sure such a clause was included in the deal with the expansion draft in mind, or if it was simply standard MLS loan-deal boilerplate.
Either way, Stephen King is gone. Sadly, this means my readers (if any) will now be spared a season’s worth of pun-filled headlines. I always liked Stephen King, he was the sort of guy all fans are happy to have on their team, a consummate team player who never stopped running. I was always impressed with him, and I wish him nothing but the best (in the other 28 games, at least) in Seattle. He will most likely find playing time much easier to come by in the Emerald City, so the move will be good for him in the long run.
Ultimately, with a deep midfield and an increasingly shallow corps of defenders (as everyone gets a year older, Diego Gutierrez retires, and Líder Mármol continually fails to impress), the team will be hurt less by his leaving than they would have been by that of Brandon Prideaux, the other likely selection. While Prideaux is not a spectacular player, he’s a solid defender and an underrated part of the Fire’s back line.
Is it March yet?
