Firestarter
By: Tom | March 13th, 2007The season opener is less than four weeks away. The rumours of Cuauhtemoc Blanco joining the Fire just won’t stop. Ticket sales are brisk for the visit of the LA Galaxy, due to the buzz over their new English star, Darren Currie (or maybe it’s something to do with that other English bloke, Brand Beckham).
And I have to make a confession, as I begin this blog: I have never been this excited about the start of an MLS season. As an Englishman living in Chicago, I’ve always paid more attention to events back home in the Premiership than the soccer under my nose in America, even though I’ve long had a soft spot for the Fire since my first visit to see them at Cardinal Stadium in 2003 (helped by an excessively enjoyable Metra ride from the city).
But that’s all about to change. It’s time to abandon armchair fandom, resist Eurosnobbery, and embrace the Chicago Fire and Major League Soccer whole-heartedly. I hope long-time fans of the Fire will comment when my newbism shows, and I hope to open a few eyes of fans of European soccer to the American soccer scene. And most of all, I hope the Fire kicks some Major League Soccer arse.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. As for the South Side, it has been quite a change from England, I’ll say that much…
