Fire vs. Crew
By: Tom | June 3rd, 2007A Sunday game at 6pm today. The last home game was also a Sunday, at 4pm; before that, it was a Thursday night game, and before that, a Saturday evening game. One thing I dislike about MLS is the lack of a consistent schedule. There was always a certain rhythm to the week when I watched football games in England – apart from a few midweek games, the match was always Saturday at 3pm. Of course, fans of Premiership teams today face the same issues as MLS fans, with inconsistent kickoff times due to the demands of television and football of entertainment.
But I digress. Today the Fire face the Columbus Crew, as Dave Sarachan’s lottery numbers have come up once more with another home game against one of the league’s chump teams. Another chance for Dave to stave off the ‘Can the Chan’ banners. A prime opportunity to win for the first time in six games. Will it be another frustrating display, like last week against Real Salt Lake, when the Fire’s possession was wasted by the lack of a cutting edge? That hasn’t been remedied off the field, as Marcelo Salas’ trial still has not led to a signing.

Notabbott notes that the Fire’s injury report makes for very confusing reading, with the league and team reports conflicting. Moreover, Coach Dave told the Trib earlier this week Mapp was doubtful for today – yet he’s not listed on the injury report. Chris Rolfe listed as questionable on the report, though Coach Dave says he should play (but maybe only a half). Here’s the list from the Fire’s official site, for what it’s worth:
OUT: DF Osei Telesford (L groin strain); MF Thiago (R groin strain); MF Diego Gutierrez (L toe fracture); QUESTIONABLE: FW Chris Rolfe (L ankle sprain); PROBABLE: FW Pascal Bedrossian (L hamstring strain)
This is a game the Fire should win; if they lose, Coach Dave might want to hit the ejector button on that hot seat.
