Fire News Updates

By: Tom | March 22nd, 2007

Following an MLS team closely in the offseason does not quite have the drama and cache of ploughing through the insane rumours and speculation of a Premiership team. It’s a more sedate pace, a little more early twentieth century (unless you follow The Galaxy, of course), and I quite like it that way.

Here’s the news that’s trickled in so far this week:

- The Fire lost 2-1 to Honduras last night. I’m not going to print the preseason record at this point. At least one of the Fire players – Ivan Guerrero, a Honduran – was on the winning side.
- Chris Rolfe pullled out of the U.S. squad, but should be fine for the opener. No point risking him in a friendly.
- Erik Hort’s been around the block, but he’s found a home with the Fire
- A handy little Fire season preview on socceramerica.com to remind us the season is actually starting soon
- The Fire faces Miami FC this Saturday. Here’s the rest of the preseason schedule.
- There’s a new Fire podcast out, in which the host smoothly recaps the offseason moves (or rather, lack of them). The debut episode shows plenty of promise, though the promo for the server hosting the podcast reminded me a little of this.

[Observant regular readers will note there was no mention of a certain Mexican footballer rumoured to be joining the Fire. Quite what the lack of news on that front means I cannot say, but we're getting close to the roster deadline, and the lack of DP signings across MLS is somewhat surprising to me.]

The lack of DP across MLS is a big story. It is actually a good thing in my opinion. I was afraid that once Beckham was signed all the other teams would forget their budgets and sign big name players for big contracts. The mistakes of the NASL still weigh in many longtime American soccer fans minds.

That’s a good point, Peter. A wave of hastily signed washed-up and overpaid foreign stars would certainly not be good for the future of MLS.

On the other hand, I wonder if sometimes people (not you specifically) actually over emphasise being cautious about signing foreign stars so as not to repeat the mistakes of NASL, as if it would suddenly doom MLS to the same fate. The NASL had a lot of problems in other areas that MLS has learned from (such as by building SSS, not having a bizarre scoring system or shootouts, etc) making the two situations not exactly comparable.

At some point, don’t MLS teams need to take some risks to improve the product on the field? A few judiciously chosen foreign stars would add some needed flair and juice to the league, so long as the future isn’t mortgaged on them (as you point out, they certainly shouldn’t abandon budget considerations).
