Fire may sign 6′5 goalkeeper
By: Tom | March 22nd, 2007OK, Jon Busch isn’t actually 6′5 (he’s 5′10), he just “plays” that tall according to informed sources. I guess conceding roughly 874 goals in preseason has made the Fire realise they need an experienced backup goalkeeper, as the former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award finalist is training with the team. Or maybe it’s just that anytime you can sign a 5′10 keeper in his thirties who has barely played for two years due to injury woes, waived by the Crew at the end of 2006 and released by Toronto this week, you just can’t pass up the opportunity.
The former MLS all-star was released on Wednesday by Toronto FC in the wake of the team’s trade for FC Dallas midfielder Richard Mulrooney. In Chicago, Busch is expected to compete with incumbent starter Matt Pickens, as well as second-year backup David Mahoney, 25. The word around Chicago is that Pickens wants to play in Europe after the 2007 MLS season, which makes Busch an intriguing insurance policy for a team that recently traded long-time starter Zach Thornton to the Colorado Rapids.
On the other hand, Busch will most likely be a good backup and keep the young Pickens on his toes, as he was once considered to be the “third-highest impact of any MLS player on any MLS team in the history of the league by MLSnet writer Jeff Bradley” according to Wikipedia. That fine piece of research proves that this blog will leave no easily found stone unturned to bring you a balanced view on the latest Fire news.

Eh, I would’ve liked to see him in Toronto. But I think you guys need one more than us.

He was just released because of roster issues, right? Toronto didn’t discover he was really 5′6 and shrinking or something?

He wasn’t a bad keeper with the Crew when he was healthy. I saw him early in his career when he played in the then A-League and he was probably the best keeper in the league. That was years and injuries ago though.

Being the “third highest impact player in league history” is a great title if it pans out, but seeing that our shorty keeper hasn’t been the “impact” player that he could be… I don’t know if Bradley’s title really makes me feel any better about having him on the roster
