Fire Bits and Bobs
By: Tom | March 26th, 2007Do you use the expression “bits and bobs” over here in the States? Sometimes I forget which expressions are peculiarly British, having now spent most of my adult life here in Chicago. Just a forewarning in case this MLS blog is occasionally incomprehensible to my American readers. But do not worry, I have no objections to calling football soccer, and as my manifesto on American soccer explains, I am doing my best to embrace my surroundings.
It would help just a little, though, if the Fire showed some spark of promise before the season begins in less than two weeks. The Fire seem to have forgotten how to win, as they contrived to lose 1-0 to Miami FC for their third straight preseason defeat. Fear not, for the official press release hastily explains it all away the first paragraph of its report:
The Fire started with a younger lineup with the majority of its veterans watching from the sidelines. The game was almost entirely played in heavy rain and windy conditions.
Oh, well, that’s alright then. The report goes on to explain that ‘The “Men in Red” continued to challenge the Miami defense throughout the first half, but were unable to finish.’ Now, if you really want a nickname such as the Men in Red to become common parlance, maybe your own press release should stop putting it in quotation marks? Just a thought.
Luis Arroyoyave’s blog on soccer and the Fire reveals the Fire “may” have a shirt sponsor by the opener, and that there may “still” be a “front-runner”, but he just leaves us with that little tease, and an implication that the Blanco talks are still on and highly serious.
Speaking of blogs, the Sun-Times Fire blog is fairly amusing right now. For several weeks, it’s been blank: I’ve got to wonder if the Fire marketing department are really delighted about paying for a banner ad above a page about the Fire the Sun-Times seems disinterested enough to leave empty.

Tom, I feel your pain… I believe my blogs are a crude mix of distinct Americanisms and Brit speak. Awesome bollocks!!

Nick – I think it’d be good to break into some Cockney rhyming slang once in a while, might get us into some Barney Rubble though.

“men in red” is such an awful nickname.
i like just reds or the fans have a good nickname – la maquina roja
or the red machine.
