Dan Loney Doesn’t Believe
By: Tom | August 31st, 2007The Fire’s resurgence under Osorio and with Blanco onboard has turned heads, but one man has his doubts. The blog Dan Loney Says It All hedges its bets.
I’m not a big believer in Chicago just yet - their “resurgence” has been a win against short-handed Toronto, tying the Crew, bullying Salt Lake, and trading wins with the sinking Wizards. They’ve looked pretty doing it, though. A Chicago win would be the cue for a nice free-for-all in the East down the stretch.
I’m not quoting this to say he’s wrong. In fact, the very same thoughts have been gnawing at me, too. And indeed, our self-esteem is surely also much higher now that when we look in the mirror, we don’t see Dave Sarachan and a frontline of Carr and Barrett staring back at us.
So has it all been a trick of the light? I don’t think so. Loney says we’ve looked pretty doing it; I’d say it’s more than that — we’ve shown verve and swagger on the offensive end. We still have problems defending, and Bakary Soumare is going to need to grow up pretty fast to hold that midfield spot. We need Conde in to soon to shore up the backline. We need Armas to forget about the miles on his clock. And we can’t afford Rolfe to get hurt again, with Mapp out for another extended period once more.
This week’s two road games will tell us an awful lot. Without at least three points, we’ll be in trouble.
