Columbus!

By: Tom | September 10th, 2007

I got back from Columbus yesterday, a rain soaked adventure that saw me nearly pass out during the game, 200+ Fire fans dominate the stadium with waves of noise, and must crucially, the Fire earning three points thanks to a very nicely taken Paolo Wanchope goal.

I’ll have a full report when I’m fully recovered, but in the meantime, what were your thoughts on the performance? One thing I was very impressed was new signing Conde’s composure and distribution (not just on his assist for the goal). Looks like an excellent and much-needed addition to the backline.

Conde looked great. He was everywhere and did well to clean up in the back.

We started with eight defenders and three attackers. We need Justin and Ivan back soon, especially since everyone is figuring out Blanco. An in-form Rolfe would be great too.

    My clothes are still damp.

Definitely agree Rolfe needs to get his head together. He seems to be confused as to what is role is out there.

Rolfe is still shaking the rust off after not playing for nearly three months. He actually was very active the entire time he was on the field and had two or three opportunities that he normally would finish. Often, the balls being played to him on his runs were just a little low and were picked off by a defender. It’s coming together at just the right time and by the time we get to the playoffs, I think he’ll be back in form. You have to keep in mind that while he was out, the entire system changed with a new coach, Blanco, and Wanchope. It takes time to learn a new system and to establish chemistry with your running mates.

My wife and I only became soccer fans in the last six weeks. We watched the Columbus game on our computer via MLSLive.tv for $5.00. The three quarters screen worked the best and was worth every penny. I went to a Sox game this weekend and was never so bored, partly because the Sox aren’t very good, but mostly because soccer blows baseball and football away. What a great sport.

I think Conde sent two over the top passes to Wanchope, one of which resulted in a goal. Wanchope’s strength seems to be timing runs on long passes.

Rolfe, posing as “Ralph” has fooled no-one. :)

    Seriously, good points though.

William, you should get MLS Direct Kick — it’s the best value on sports subscriptions.
