Chris Rolfe to Europe: I Hope Old Man Winter Likes Soaps!

By: Joe | September 2nd, 2009

Yes Fire fans, Mr. ESPN is leaving the Fire in the January transfer window. So for those of you who hate soap operas, I’m sorry. As the Chicago Fire World Turns will continue on and I’m sure that the drama will be top notch.

As my colleague Matthew, has punctually stated in his recent article “I Wish I Had A Crystal Ball,” the Fire are on the verge of a possible exodus of players with the question marks and explanation points surrounding the exits and of Blanco, McBride, Rolfe, Pappa, Soumare, Prideaux, Segares, Conde and even Dennis Hamlett.

To avoid having to re-write Matthew’s hard work, lets begin by morning the departure of two of Chicago’s more valuable players. Chris Rolfe and Bakary Soumare, who have followed their Guiding Light to the promised land. Soumare found his way to France’s Ligue 1 by playing well, being a team leader and throwing down in the locker room with his own head coach (that will do it). Chris Rolfe has however, logged the hours, the pain and sweat, and shown that he is an excellent player worthy of Another World. He will be greatly missed.

Yet, there is good to come of this. Chris Rolfe will be leaving to join Aalborg of the Danish Superliga. Yes, the same Aalborg who played Champions League football last season, butting heads with the likes of Manchester United, Villarreal and Celtic in the group stage. The Danes have been good to American players and Chris Rolfe will throw his hat, or maybe in his case his gloves, into the exciting world of young American players to follow in Europe. Maybe this will boost up his national team profile as well! Who can be sad to see a countryman on the rise?

So what will happen with All Our Children in the off-season? All I know is that I have already started writing drafts of what the Fire will need to do to retain our winning tradition in the next campaign. I may also need to find a therapist to help me throughout the winter as I sit, staring, wondering about our young and our restless.

Great, there goes my favorite player on the team.

I am legitimately concerned about the team for next year. Hopefully Dennis and Frank have their eyes on some good talent, because we’re going to need some serious reloading. Maybe some of the youth players or guys in the PDL set-up could get a first team look before the end of the year.

This is one of those moments that makes me wish the reserve league was still playing, so that the peripheral players had a chance to get some game tempo playing in.

Also, you guys haven’t mentioned it, but I’m genuinely concerned that Wilman Conde is going to leave the team in the offseason, too. Assuming Gonzo takes his well deserved shot in a bigger league, that’s three of the four first choice defenders gone. More than anything, than gutting of the defense worries me. Dasan will probably be an adequate replacement for the departing centerbacks, but I have absolutely no faith that CJ Brown will be adequate as anything more than a deputizer in desperate straights.

Chris, I couldn’t agree more. I think that CJ Brown is a great leader and influence on the team off the pitch. Unfortunately, he has a habit of picking up injuries early on in games and this makes him very unreliable. I am very pleased to see that Tim Ward has found a home. He has really pleased me this season and will be important moving forward.

You’re right about Conde. He has had some problems in the past and said that he had put it all behind him to focus on his game but you have to wonder once the smoke has cleared and the season is behind us, he may spark up some transfer talk again. But, with Osorio out of a job, he may decide to stay?

It will be a long off-season…

Well, I actually quite happy with Rolfes departure…..You see, I´m from Aalborg, and we are very excited about the new signing. We´ll treat your lad well, and hope to see him raise the bar on your national team. Thanks. NJU.

Thanks Nullw666. But we would very much like him to stay here. I’m seriously worried about next season with all of these departures.

I love watching Rolfe play. He’s able to pull goals out of thin air sometimes and its awe inspiring. He’ll be missed that’s for sure.
