Chicago 1-1 Toronto, photos
By: Tom | July 8th, 2007
The Fire drew with Toronto last night, Chad Barrett’s 70th minute penalty cancelled out by a goal from Maurice Edu minutes later. Both teams had chances to win it in the dying minutes, but a share of the points was probably a fair result. 13,080 people were at the game, with a large showing in Section 8 from the Fire fans and 200 Toronto fans making the trip down.
The positives:
- first game I’ve been to for a while where I haven’t been completely disgusted by our performance
- Bakary Soumare could turn out to be really, really good
- we generated plenty of opportunities
- crowd was loud, into the game; section 8 strong
- fun seeing away supporters for once
- good to see Justin Mapp back, running at people
The negatives:
- woeful finishing
- Calen Carr, bless his cotton socks, really needs to spend some time in the gym
- the fact i was actually happy we didn’t lose at home
- Chris Armas looked old
- still too many empty seats in Toyota Park
More pics of Section 8 and the Toronto fan after the jump.

Great, great game. One of the best I’ve seen from both sides. But man, I hate Calen Carr.

Lincoln’s observations on Tom’s observations:
Armas IS old
Don’t send Carr to the gym send him to the showers - When is the last time he scored or created a scoring opp?
Is anyone else noticing that Chad Barrett would really be a much better stopper or 5th midfielder than stirker
Soumare was the only creating force on the pitch
Mapp needs to become a leader
The encouraging note is that with the introduction of Soumare we held a bit more in the midfield. As with the USMNT the Fire did their best to get up 1-0 on a lucky goal and then because of the fatigue of defending they let an easily defended ball drop on the 6 yd box.
BUT - TFC is NOT Argentina. We need to do better.
Oh yeah, fire Dennis and Guppy.

Lincoln, when will your fire Osorio campaign begin? Next week?

Everything I’ve read about Osorio indicates we won’t be seeing Fire players tire in the second half. He’s a strict believer in conditioning and is coach looking to make his mark. Great, great sign. I went to the game and my 8 year old son couldn’t stop asking us to get out of our seats and go to section 8 because he wanted to chant and stand and scream. Man, I love that boy. It was nice to see some other parents in the same boat too.
I was encouraged by Soumare and the overall play of our defense. Not too many silly turnovers. Can’t wait until Rolfe gets back because Coleen Carr is playing now out of necessity but he’s nowhere near MLS quality. Thiago needs to step the hell up. I didn’t see squat from him on Saturday.
Note to all Section 8 fans: don’t light up smoke bombs and don’t toss crap out onto the pitch. Really, it doesn’t add to the atmosphere…it just makes us look like assholes.

Osorio who?

As a father of a 5 year old and frequenter of Section 8, I second Joe’s Section 8 remarks. Section 8 adds so much to the experience. I watched 3 incidents where TP was hurled at the goal keeper directly. This is not only un-cool but un-sporting.
I for one don’t mind a smoke bomb after a goal but random use of pyrotechnic is, un-interesting.
Stop throwing and keep singing!
Oh oh oh oh ohhhhhhhh!

Man, I love to watch Chicago lose. Especially to Toronto–remember all the hot air the Fire had about turf, and fans’ misguided responses to Mo’s remark about your attendance. Hot Air. There were NOT 13,000 people at Toyota on the weekend.
Props to section 8, though, and some of the other fans who were there. You’re all right in my books.
