A Frustrating Night: Chicago Fire v. DC United Review
By: Joe | August 30th, 2009Unfortunately, Dasan Robinson cannot be the fall guy for this one. After his late heroics/ complete stupidity against Colorado, I can’t remember that last time that I wanted kiss something and kill it at the same time, I thought the Fire were in for a long night against DC United.
With only 3 healthy defenders, the Fire entrusted the LB duties to Mike Banner, the second year youngster who weighs maybe a buck-thirty and spends most of his time playing as an attacking midfielder. But Banner was not who I was worried about. The whole back line looked vulnerable.
I was wrong. Maybe it’s because DC has been horrible on the road as of recent but the Fire looked good. Service was excellent coming from Banner in the back who picked out Nyarko numerous times. Between Banner, Nyarko and Rolfe, the Fire were connecting very well and looking mighty threatening. Blanco did his usual of getting the ball, dancing around and losing the ball, but the fire worked well together and I thought that this could be our night to take top of the conference. But just when I thought the sun was smiling down, the reality of no Soumare, Conde, Segares or Ward hit like a ton of bricks as all of the Fire’s efforts were undone by poor marking off a set piece.
I have to admit, I thought the Fire would stage a comeback just like so many this season but the final third was again our Achilles heel. The most frustrating defeats against rivals are when you’ve been the better team all night but still come away with nothing. DC was stubborn defensively and well organized and the Fire just couldn’t put that final ball through or take the shot, and that was the difference between 0-1 and 3-1.
3 things to take from the game:
–Blanco just doesn’t cut it anymore. He had three beautiful looks on goal from dead balls and failed to put a single one on frame. He gave the ball up too easily and left huge holes in the midfield that Pause cannot fill himself.
–More Fire attackers need to play think like Chris Rolfe. Rolfe is the only player on the roster who’s first thought when receiving the ball is taking a shot and will do it! Too often do we try and pass the ball into the net and someone’s got to step up and test from outside the 18.
–Dennis Hamlett needs to think harder about his subs. Dimitrov is not a difference maker. Calen Carr has way more experience, speed and flare needed to spark the offense in the final minutes.

It was a spirited performance. Too bad McBride’s out. It sounds like the fire really need some finishing!

Also, blanco’s contract is up at the end of the season so hopefully the fire will let him go and use some of that money to buy some young creative talent in the midfield.

I agree, Blanco should have done better with the dead balls, but he did play plenty of good balls throughout the game. I disagree with what you said about Banner, I think he has a lot to offer. He plays well on both sides of the field. Dimitrov has not shown me anything to prove his worth as a forward and Nyarko needs to get back to his early season form. His touch is off and finishing isn’t there.
Overall, I thought the Fire played more dominant then DC, but just did not create opportunities in the final third. They had better ball movement and possession. The Free kick they scored on was magnificent. Namoff was in a beautiful spot and the only chance it could have been stopped is if the defender got to the ball first.Posted from

I couldn’t agree more about Blanco, it’s getting painful to watch. He shouldn’t be able to take free kicks anymore.
I’m glad there are new people taking of this space and I hope you can keep it going much better than I did.

Matthew, don’t get me wrong, I was incredibly impressed by Banner’s performance! He has become a very exciting young player and he really stepped up against KC, Colorado and DC. I was simply just worried before hand about taking a young, smaller player who makes up for it with speed, and pulling him out of position for 90 minutes.
You’re right though, DC’s goal was perfect. The delivery was spot on but it makes you wonder what the starting back line could have done because they have been so good in the air.

Nice posts, Joe. It’s not only great to see someone willing to share their thoughts on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly that is our Chicago Fire, but to be willing to write such posts at 3:58 am? Priceless. Welcome to the world of blogging, Joe. We’re happy to have ya!

Joe, Joe, Joe…. I was too quick to give you the “time of post” props in my earlier message. After I posted my own comment and saw the time stamp, I can see that there is a 3 hour time difference from Central Time. Assuming you are in Chicago as well, your post coming in at 6:58 am is just little less impressive. But no matter when you write, I’m happy that you are. Keep up the good work!
