What’s Blanco’s salary?
By: Tom | April 10th, 2007Well, if Trib Fire blogger Luis Arroyave doesn’t know, the odds that I do are about as great as Alan Smith tearing apart Roma (see, I can watch European football, make bad jokes and blog Fire news at the same time).
But as Luis points out on his blog, Frank Dell’Alpa dropped this nugget in his last column that might give us an idea:
A Fire offer was rejected by Zinedine Zidane, who wanted as much as $15 million. Chicago’s Plan B could be a cost-effective one. Blanco will earn more than $2.5 million annually (Beckham’s salary will be $5.5 million), and the league should see an immediate return.
This is signficant, since most Fire-watchers were under the impression Temo (this is what I’ll be calling Blanco from now on, so I can stop googling on how to spell CuauhtĂ©moc) would be making perhaps $1.5-2 million annually. An extra million is a big deal in terms of MLS salaries. Though I reckon the AEG bank balance can handle it, those demons from the days of the NASL’s financial collapse do still haunt American soccer as it enters a new era of larger salaries.
(oh, and at least Chelsea are losing.)

The question really is how much money will he generate. Have there been any reports about extra tickets sold since he signed?

I haven’t seen anything released yet, though judging from the response to his signing, they’ll make back a lot of it this year. The bigger question is whether he’ll be worth that much money in two or three years - if he’s injured or ineffective in MLS at that stage, the Fire will be on the hook somewhat.
