Mapp to Everton?
By: Tom | April 6th, 2007Setanta sports reports that Everton are set to “swoop” for the Fire’s Justin Mapp this summer.
The 22-year-old can operate on either flank and is a constant threat with his pace, skill and crossing ability. It is believed that the Toffees are keen to offload Dutch midfielder Andy Van Der Meyde and replace him with a lively winger who can supply the type of service that striker Andy Johnson is crying out for.
The report does note Mapp may have trouble obtaining a work-permit for the UK. The track-record of Americans in the Premiership is fairly mixed – former Fire winger DaMarcus Beasley has had a difficult time at Man City (albeit troubled by injury). I suspect Mapp would do well, but let’s hope the Fire can hang on to him for a little while longer at least.

Interesting. Brian McBride also made the jump from MLS to Everton. I’m not surprised that Mapp is attracting interest. He has the talent.

McBride has been great in the Premiership, but his style is pretty English (not that Englishness is any great qualification for playing in the Premiership these days). I think Mapp might be more suited to it than Beasley, though.
Incidentally, Tottenham would be another good location for Mapp, in need of a winger and maybe some of that Lennon magic would rub off on him.

This would be a great move. Everton has some a history of giving North American players a chance. Mapp might not be like McBride but he is a strong player and I think he would fit in with the EPL game.
