God Save the Queen and all Fire and Toronto FC Supporters
By: Tom | May 9th, 2007
The internet sure does embolden folks, as the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC supporer’s group messageboards have been buzzing with insults ahead of this weekend’s game.
National pride has of course reared its head, with cooler heads now calling for calm during the pregame anthems. I’m fairly bemused by all this excitement over nationality: and hey, given the Fire’s GM is English and Toronto’s manager is Scottish, I’m planning to belt out “God Save the Queen” in an effort to rekindle North Atlantic unity under a Reformed Great British Empire. The Queen’s visit to the U.S. this week was mere cover for this renewed effort.
I do think American soccer could use the buzz of some good old-fashioned enmity between home and away supporters, though of course, one doesn’t wish for any international incidents to occur.
In any case, I’m off to Toronto tomorrow, so my posting may be sporadic over the next few days. I will be taking plenty of photos of the Fire’s victory, which I will particularly enjoy after Mo Johnston’s extremely curious comments:
TFC coach Mo Johnston yesterday scoffed at Sarachan’s comments about the BMO field turf. “I think Dave is really more concerned about having to play in a stadium with 20,000 screaming fans,” Johnston said. “This is an absolutely safe turf. Our players play and practise here and none have had any complaints.”
Johnston said the Chicago brass should not have any complaints about BMO. “I would think they would be more concerned about playing in front of only 7,000 or 8,000 fans (in Chicago), than our turf in Toronto,” Johnston said.
“7,000 or 8,000 fans (in Chicago)”? OK, Mo, whatever you say. Maybe you should focus on, you know, your team actually scoring a goal in Major League Soccer before you break out the nonsensical trash talk.

Looks like TFC got that goal you were talking about followed by two more and the win to boot. I think that’s two losses in a row now isn’t it? Not good.

Indeed Domenic, two losses and six goals conceded in six days is not good at all. As I said even when we were winning, the Fire have not looked good as a team all season. Maybe Blanco turns things round, we’ll see.
