Former Fire News

By: Tom | August 7th, 2007

Not much going on in Chicago Fireland this week, with no game coming up this weekend, but there’s some news from former Fire stars worth reporting on.

Firstly, DaMarcus Beasley scored for Ranger, but unfortunately had to endure racist abuse in the Champions League qualifier against FK Zeta.

Former PSV Eindhoven winger Beasley, who hit the 81st-minute winner, said: ‘That’s something FIFA and UEFA must fight with, and solve.

‘This is the 21st century, and we are still having trouble with it.

‘That’s not normal, not just for us, black players, that’s not normal for all other normal people.

Let’s hope UEFA keep to their recent promise to crack down and take severe action on FK Zeta.

And it’s not good news for Damani Ralph, either: he hasn’t played for almost two years now due to injuries.

“Right now I am facing a third surgery on my knee and if this fails I will basically have to seek another career,” Ralph, a former St. George’s College standout told The Gleaner over the weekend.

Let’s hope for better luck for former Fire standouts in the future.

In other not-good Fire alumni news, Dema Kovalenko was in a car accident. I read that he’s okay, although he needed stitches to his face.

    A comment on Calen Carr.
Having watched Carr now on at least 10 occasions, I can tell you that this man has talent – far more natural talent than most of the Fire players, and in fact, the better part of MLS. The issue is for him to TAME his talent and stay on the ball, play with full CONFIDENCE – and that means TIME on the field.
He can be one spectacular, really spectacular player. All the naysayers be damned at this site: such superficial comments, really.
