Fire Sale

By: Tom | June 29th, 2007

The Fire are for sale. It was only a matter of time, given AEG has had a long and not very hidden plan to eventually divest themselves of all their MLS teams except for the Galaxy, but it looks like that time has now come. Three different groups have been in pursuit of the Fire over the past year, and at least two groups are currently interested, with AEG looking to sell.

The good news for Fire fans is that the potential owners are local. This has the potential to be a positive change for the Fire; on the other hand, there is a danger to disrupting a stable situation. There’s also the question of any uncertainty that might arise with the Fire also looking for a new coach at the moment.

Thoughts? Glad to see the back of AEG? And what does this mean for GM John Guppy?

I’m not a Fire supporter, but as an MLS fan, I’m happy to see AEG a bit less involved. The same company owning three teams in the same league (two in the same conference) doesn’t exactly scream “legitimate” to the rest of the footballing world. MLS is better off with diversified ownership.

A group named “Pappy&Gulls” are said to be in negotiations with the club and may in fact be close to returning Wilt to the fold if a deal goes through.
