Fire sale close
By: Tom | July 9th, 2007
To follow on from Luis’ post today on the problems the Klopas group are having putting a bid in, my understanding is that the Bronfman family, owner of Seagram’s, has bid $35 million with no other competing bids expected.
So the Fire’s probable new owners are very rich, but very not local too. Will they stick to the Fire’s heritage, or try to rebrand the team? Will they understand how important Section 8 is? Will they invest to return the club to its glory days?
Note the words “tradition, honor, passion” in the image to the right. Pace Kent McDill, those words are the club motto of the Chicago Fire, and no-one else. Let’s hope Seagrams recognises and respects those words, and invests enough to bring the Fire back to their glory days.
So what do you think about the likely sale to Seagrams? Excitement or apprehension? For me, it’s a little of both.

does this mean we could be rebranded “The Chicago Ginger Ales”?

i think this is great. it’ll be f-ing awesome to have a new owner who really cares about the team and isn’t afraid to have a good time in chicago too!!!!!!

Tom, your concerns, and those of Fire fans are legit, though probably uwarranted. As a Canadian ex-pat in Illinois, I remember very well the Bronfman ownership of the Expos–during their years of respectabilty from the late 60s to 1990: Rusty Staub, Steve Rogers, Tim Raines, Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, and the drafting players who would go on to star with other teams in the 90s. The Bronfmans were in place for all that–hands off, get the right people on the job, build community etc. etc. I think the Bronfmans will be great for Chicago and great for MLS–their moneyed and the have experience in pro sports.
