Brazil in Chicago!

By: Tom | August 12th, 2007

Alright, this isn’t exactly Fire related, but any big soccer event in Chicago is good for the game here, and this one’s a big ‘un: according to Steven Goff, the U.S. will host Brazil at Soldier Field this September 9th.

USA-Mexico at Azteca on Sept. 9, rumored to be in trouble, has been cancelled. USA-Brazil at Soldier Field on the same day has been agreed upon. Not a bad replacement match, huh?

No reason given for the change, but Spanish TV rights were believed to be part of the problem for the original matchup.

So Brazil will play the U.S. lads on the 9th on ESPN2, then meet Mexico three days later at Foxborough.

Not bad: I guess it does help that the headquarters of the USSF reside here.

Just remember that despite the fact that USSF headquarters are here, Chicago did not host a USMNT game from something like 1993 until 2005 (US vs Poland, I think was the 2005 game). It seems that suddenly the taps have been opened.

True, though Soldier Field was outdated/closed and being rebuilt for much of that time, too.

It is always a party when Brazil comes to town. Show up plenty early, Tom, so you can soak up the samba atmosphere. Nice to see the US play a big country too. I hope Brazil sends its big guns.

SF was only closed for less than two years. I respectfully disagree that SF’s age was the cause (that said, I’ve never heard a good reason). OSF was good enough for the 1994 World Cup and for the Bears. While it was indeed aging, that didn’t stop places like the Cotton Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the LA Coliseum, Foxboro, RFK, Giants Stadium, and others from getting USMNT games during that period.

Fair play, fuegofan. I have a friend who works at USSF. I will ask him and report back.
