Blanco signing - local TV coverage
By: Tom | April 14th, 2007Below is a video of Chicago Sportsnet’s coverage of the Blanco signing.
Four comments:

1) It’s pretty amazing that in a city with over a million Hispanic-Americans, the sportscaster presumes that not a single Fire fan could possibly be able to pronounce “Cuauhtemoc”.
2) What on earth is going on with the Fire GM John Guppy’s accent? I can tell he’s an Englishman who has been living in the States for most of his adult live instantly, as the perversion of one’s vowels is something that’s happened to me after six years here. It’s not a fun experience. But it’s even weirder to hear a broad Boston accent peeking periodically into his quaint English accent.
3) Chris Armas almost sounds genuinely excited about the Blanco signing. I think he might mean it when he says he’s pleased to be on the same side as such a fierce competitor, comparing him to Jordan in terms of his “edge”. Matt Pickens, on the other hand, looks very unconvincing as he seemingly reads a script from a PR sheet.
4) Rookie signing, the 6′4 Bakary Soumare, looks like a young version of Dikembe Mutombo. He’s going to scare the living daylights out of any attacker who gets within twenty yards of him. Let’s hope he also picks up the finger-wagging taunt, too.

Boyle’s pronunciation of Cuauhtemoc was cringe worthy. I mean, come on, find someone to help you pronounce it before you do a story on him.
