Blanco to sign

By: Tom | March 31st, 2007

The Chicago Tribune reports that Cuauhtemoc Blanco is expected to sign with the Fire on Monday or Tuesday. It seems almost certain the deal will indeed happen, but it’s unclear when Blanco will actually play for the Fire, which is a pretty important minor detail. Spending a million or two on a 34 year-old if he will only play half the season would not be ideal, but let’s wait and see what the official announcement reveals.

The signing will trigger a torrent of opinion, much of which - especially that in the English language - is likely to be negative. I have not seen Blanco play this season (and I rather doubt many of those calling him washed-up actually watch much Mexican league soccer either), so I’m going to reserve my own opinion for now.

But what do you, as fans of the Fire, of Blanco or of MLS more generally think of the deal? Will Blanco score goals in MLS and bring the crowds out to Toyota Park, or is this signing proof that MLS is treading dangerously down the NASL-road by obtaining older foreign stars who do not have much left in the tank?

Blanco will bring a lot of supporters, people love him but my personal opinion (and i do watch the Mexican league) is that he is nowhere near the quality of player he once was… i remember like 6 years ago, it was such a treat to see him play… he had all these cool moves that we would all try to imitate… he was the IT soccer player… but he suffered a knee injury a couple years back and ever since hes been a more dull player… yet regardless Mexicans everywhere still love him, and he is still called upon to play on the National team…

I can’t wait to see him play, i just found out that he’s gonna play for the MLS, theirs more reason for me to watch the MLS now, me and my friends have been talking about it all day. IT’s gonna be cool to watch him play here in the states. I’ll keep my ears open for more details.

I think that Chicago singing Blanco is awsome, it’ll neat to see him play, especialy against david beckham.
