Dan Loney Doesn’t Believe
By: Tom |The Fire’s resurgence under Osorio and with Blanco onboard has turned heads, but one man has his doubts. The blog Dan Loney Says It All hedges its bets.
I’m not a big believer in Chicago just yet - their “resurgence” has been a win against short-handed Toronto, tying the Crew, bullying Salt Lake, and trading wins [...]
And we’re back
By: Tom |Apologies for the lack of updates this week. I hate to be one of those bloggers, but it’s been a busy time, and it’s not going to be much better next week as I’m out of town on the east coast. I will be catching a Fire game on my way back, as I’ll [...]
A Double Helping of KC
By: Tom |Wednesday’s game against KC left me at an unusual loss for words. There was a lot of incident, from Blanco’s penalty miss to Segares’ sending off to KC’s comeback that left them 3-2 winners, but it was all hectic, garbled, and incoherent.
And I can’t make anything coherent of it. In fact, that rather matches [...]
Fire are on, uh, Fire
By: Tom |Truth be told, the first half of the game against Real Salt Lake tonight had been pretty dire until Blanco controlled the ball in the 43rd minute, lined up a shot from twenty-five yards out and blasted a dipping, swerving, mean screwdriver of a shot into the top right hand corner.
After that, the Fire [...]
New Fire Signing
By: Tom |Reports are coming out that the Fire have signed a Colombian defender, from Osorio’s old club. The AP says:
Thirteen-time Colombian league champion Millonarios said Thursday it had sold 25-year-old defender Wilman Code to the Chicago Fire, reuniting him with manager Juan Carlos Osorio.
Daniel Jankowski, the Fire’s director of media relations, would not confirm the [...]
Fire Front Office and Section 8
By: Tom |Jamie Trecker, guest-blogging for Luis’ on the Trib’s Red Card blog, has an interesting post about the Fire’s continual problems with Section 8, their loyal and loud supporters’ group.
In fact, the only two groups that MLS hasn’t tried to attract are the ones that actually have showed up to see the games from day one: [...]
Brazil in Chicago!
By: Tom |Alright, this isn’t exactly Fire related, but any big soccer event in Chicago is good for the game here, and this one’s a big ‘un: according to Steven Goff, the U.S. will host Brazil at Soldier Field this September 9th.
USA-Mexico at Azteca on Sept. 9, rumored to be in trouble, has been cancelled. USA-Brazil [...]
Former Fire News
By: Tom |Not much going on in Chicago Fireland this week, with no game coming up this weekend, but there’s some news from former Fire stars worth reporting on.
Firstly, DaMarcus Beasley scored for Ranger, but unfortunately had to endure racist abuse in the Champions League qualifier against FK Zeta.
Former PSV Eindhoven winger Beasley, who hit the 81st-minute [...]
Verdict: Inconclusive
By: Tom |The frenzy we Fire fans had whipped ourselves up into since the arrival of Osorio, Blanco and Wanchope was always likely to lead to expectations beyond what a still-recovering team can produce just yet. And that was the case yesterday.
It was slightly deflating to see our forward line again consist of Barrett and Carr, who [...]
