Peter Wilt and Milwaukee Expansion
By: Tom |Many Fire fans will have mixed feelings if Peter Wilt, the Fire’s former GM, ends up at the helm of another MLS team. The latest plans for MLS expansion to Milwaukee (the project he’s behind) include hosting games at a historic speedway nearby. This idea eceived some criticism around the blogosphere, including here on [...]
Why it’s Wanchoap-ay
By: Tom |The brilliant blog The Culture of Soccer informs us why the e at the end of Wanchope is silent, which at first glance is odd considering he hails from a Spanish-speaking country (Costa Rica).
Wanchope’s name is…not “native” Costa Rican (in the sense that it was brought over by the country’s original colonizers, the Spanish; actual [...]
Blanco Is Not Afraid of MLS
By: Tom |When the Fire signed Blanco, there was a lot of talk about how he wouldn’t be able to handle the physical play of MLS. How he’d not be able to deal with the chippy kicks and would lack the time he’s accustomed to in order to make things happen.
And now I’m finally watching Temo make [...]
Wanchope Signs for the Fire
By: Tom |From ESPN Soccernet:
Former Derby and Manchester City striker Paulo Wanchope has reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Chicago Fire.
The 31-year-old Costa Rican, who played at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, is set to be officially presented by the MLS side in a press conference tomorrow.
‘Wanchope has passed his medical and agreed all [...]
Media reaction to Blanco signing
By: Tom |Many people have written that Blanco’s first game had a lower profile than Beckham’s arrival. Whilst this is true, I was glad to see that today’s Chicago edition of Hoy (the popular Spanish language newspaper) featured Blanco’s debut on the front page and covered the game in depth.
There was also a two-page spread inside Hoy. [...]
Paolo Wanchope
By: Tom |Word is he’s training with the Fire, with a view to sign. I’ve no more information than that, and here’s hoping he’s less of an arsehole than Marcelo Salas was earlier this season. Beyond that, enjoy some of his old goals and dream of him linking up with Blanco!
Blanco goal!
By: Tom |Here are the highlights from Blanco’s debut against Celtic. I’ll have more later on the game, but it was a fantastic start for Blanco. We’ve been waiting all season for some decent football, and yesterday afternoon, we saw some. As much as the goal was brilliantly taken, the interplay in the 54th [...]
Blanco is here
By: Tom |It seems fitting that Blanco will make his debut for the Fire two days after Beckham’s brief appearance for the Galaxy. To me, they are inextricably linked, stars signed by AEG amidst hoopla never seen before in MLS, and leaving each respective team to suffer and struggle in an interminable wait for the arrival of [...]
Celtic! Blanco!
By: Tom |What with all the Celtic fans and Blanco fans, it should be quite a mashup in the crowd on Sunday as the Fire take on Celtic. Celtic, of course, will be smarting from their loss to the MLS Allstars; and the Fire, of course, would struggle to beat a U-14 girls team right now. [...]
Fire’s Cup Run Ends Before It Begins
By: Tom |The defending Open Cup champions, the Chicago Fire, lost tonight in their first game to USL expansion team the Carolina RailHawks. I was only able to catch some of the second half on a webcast, but what I saw was not pretty. It’s hard to say whether or not we played our starters, given [...]
