Marcelo Salas and the Fire; or, “Boys, it has more Killing for long time”.
By: Tom |The Fire’s possible signing of Marcelo Salas is all over the wires. A key figure involved in this seems to be Horacio Matta, a former Chilean tennis player who apparently is promoting Salas in the U.S. According to Matta, D.C. United are also interested in Salas, but the team has denied this.
There’s also the [...]
Marcelo Salas to join the Fire? - Update
By: Tom |Update: Luis blog reveals the news - “According to the Fire, Chilean striker Marcelo Salas will begin training with the Fire Wednesday. While Salas has yet to sign a contract with the Fire, I’m told “it’s a good possibility” he will be signed.”
You all know how much I love rumours. So I only report [...]
Blanco’s last goal for Club America (video); Welcome to the Fire!
By: Tom |Club America bowed out of the Mexican championship last night, but not before Blanco scored a cracking free-kick for his final goal as an Eagle (video below). The player Mexican commentators have been calling FireEagle for some months will soon head to the U.S. for the Gold Cup in June, and will then join [...]
AEG United
By: Tom |AEG owns three MLS teams (Chicago, LA, Houston). Here is their combined season record at this point: played 22, won 6, lost 12, drawn 5. Goals for 20, goals against 28.
Just some numbers to digest.
Live at the game
By: Tom |Earlier today I liveblogged the game from the pressbox. Shame the game was as interminably dull as my updates.
Fire vs. Real Salt Lake
By: Tom |The Fire host Real Salt Lake on Sunday at 4pm (TV: Telefutura live, CSN 7pm delayed). This is a game the Fire, and in particular coach Dave Sarachan, really need to win. A three game homestand is exactly what Sarachan needs to get some results, save his job, and get the Fire back into [...]
Don’t tell me MLS fans don’t care
By: Tom |As an Englishman, when I first arrived in the U.S., I rather got the sense that maybe MLS fans didn’t care with the same passion about their teams as supporters did back in Blighty. Without much coverage in the press or chatter in most Chicago bars, I didn’t get the sense the Fire generated [...]
We got our arses spanked on national TV - again
By: Tom |2-0 down after three minutes. My television was lucky to survive. In the end, a 3-0 defeat that makes it four straight defeats for the Fire. That includes eleven goals condeded and three scored in those games. It’s conceivable the Fire could slip to second bottom in the Eastern Conference if results go [...]
Fire news updates
By: Tom |Just some quick hits, no time to write anything substantial before the game tonight against the Red Bulls (6pm CT).
- Justin Mapp was named in Bob Bradley’s US squad for the Gold Cup. Chris Rolfe was not included. Not sure if this is due to his injury or not.
- And speaking of Rolfe’s [...]
A Fan is not a rational being
By: Tom |I’ve been hesitant to call for Dave Sarachan’s dismissal thus far. I’ve had moments, like after a 1,000 mile trip to Toronto to see schoolboy soccer, when I’ve leaned that way; then in the cold light of day, a former MLS executive convinced me to wait and see.
And of course, thanks to MLS’ [...]
